The reverse field showcases the iconic sugar maple leaf. Designed by Walter Ott, it’s been the centerpiece of all Canadian Gold Maple Leafs since the debut of the coin program. Unlike the image of Queen Elizabeth, it has remained largely unchanged throughout history.
The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series debuted in 1979 with just a 1 oz gold weight. Fractional ounces were included starting in 1982 with a 1/2 oz gold weight debuting four years later. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is one of the oldest gold bullion coins in the world as only the South African Krugerrand was a viable option for numismatists during that time.
