The obverse of the 1989 Gold Maple Leaf coins feature the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II, capturing Her Majesty as a 39-year-old. This 2nd generation version of Her Majesty was created by British coin designer Arnold Machin. This is the final year that this particular effigy of Her Majesty appears on the Gold Maple Leaf coins.
The reverse of the 1989 Gold Maple Leaf coins features the beloved Maple Leaf. This particular Maple Leaf design was created in 1979 by RCM master engraver Walter Ott.
The Gold Maple Leaf coin has been issued annually since its introduction in 1979. Initially minted in 99.9% pure gold, in November 1982, the RCM made the Gold Maple Leaf the first bullion coin to be minted in 99.99% pure gold.
The Gold Maple Leaf was initially available in only the 1 oz weight. In November 1982, when the gold purity was increased, the RCM added the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz weights. And in 1986, the RCM added the 1/2 oz weight. It is these four weights that are included in this 10th Anniversary 4-coin set.
