American Gold Eagle coins have only undergone a few alterations through the course of their history. Introduced in 1986, all American Gold Eagle coins originally had date marks in Roman numerals. From 1986 to 1991, both proof and bullion versions of the coin had date marks on the obverse using Roman numerals. From 1992 onward, date marks have been struck in Arabic numerals.
Additionally, the Proof American Gold Eagle Coins from the US Mint were originally struck at two different mints. All 1 oz coins in the proof series were struck by the West Point Mint from introduction in 1986. Fractional-weights coins were, however, struck at the Philadelphia Mint from their 1987/1988 introduction dates through 1993.
On the obverse of the 1989 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin, you’ll find the vision of Liberty that many believe is the finest to ever grace American coinage. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this vision of Liberty originally appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin through 1933.
The reverse of 1989 Proof American Gold Eagle Coins includes the design of American bald eagles. Created in 1986 for the Gold Eagle collection by Miley Busiek, this image includes a male eagle flying over the nest where a group of hatchlings rests under the watchful gaze of a female eagle.
The 1989 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins available here today come with a protective plastic slab. The coins earned PF70 certifications from the NGC, indicating that each has its full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws. UCAM proofs have frosted, matte design elements and deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
