The 1989-P 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin marks the second year that the 1/10 oz fractional-weight denomination was produced by the Philadelphia Mint, which is represented by the “P” mint marking included on one side of the coin. This gold product features a proof finish, indicating that the designs on each side of the coin are frosted while the backgrounds themselves appear mirrored. This coin was struck with 22 karats of actual gold, but it was also manufactured with a perfect metal balance of the following: 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.
The American Gold Eagle coin collection features the official gold bullion coins for the United States of America. This series was first introduced in 1987 and has been a fan-favorite among collectors and investors everywhere since. The 1/10 oz fractional-weight coin was introduced in 1988 and was manufactured at the Philadelphia Mint until after 1993, when the production of this weight denomination permanently moved to the West Point Mint.
The obverse of the 1989-P 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin shows a modified rendition of the original Double Eagle design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which was featured on United States twenty-dollar gold pieces from 1907 to 1933. In this image, a full-length figure of Lady Liberty is shown with her hair flowing out behind her. She holds an olive branch in her left hand and a torch in her right. The U.S. Capitol Building is also shown in the background at the bottom left of the obverse.
On the reverse of the 1989-P 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is a family of eagles created by sculptor Miley Busiek. In this image, a female eagle sits with her hatchlings in a nest while the male eagle flies high overhead, carrying an olive branch in its talons. Certain specs of the coin are included on the reverse as well.
