In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Gold Maple Leaf Series. At the time, it was only the second modern gold bullion coin available to investors and would become the first to feature 24-karat gold (1982). In 1989, the Royal Canadian Mint marked the 10th anniversary of the program with Proof Gold Maple Leafs. Right now, 1989 1 oz Proof Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are available from JM Bullion.

The 1989 release of Canadian Gold Maple Leafs included proof coins in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold weights. These coins were issued to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the series and were available together as a part of a set, as well as individually with presentation packaging. Among the coins offered individually was the 1 oz Proof Gold Maple Leaf.
All 1989 1 oz Proof Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins offered here come with a protective plastic capsule only. These beautiful proof specimens have frosted design elements overlaying mirrored background fields. This coin is, notably, the last issue date in the Gold Maple Series to feature the second-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
In the obverse design of 1989 Proof Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, you will find Arnold Machin’s second-generation effigy of Her Majesty. In this right-profile relief, Queen Elizabeth II is shown at the age of 39 as she was captured in 1965 by Machin when he created this effigy for British currency. This design was the first to feature on the Canadian Maple Leafs and graced the Gold Maple from 1979 to 1989.
For the reverse of 1989 1 oz Proof Gold Maple Leaf Coins, the mint includes the iconic sugar maple leaf design. This naturalistic depiction of the maple leaf was created in 1979 by Walter Ott and has graced all versions of the Maple Leaf bullion coin series over the course of its history.
