Upon its debut in 1982, it became the first annual-silver bullion coin to be released. Fractional ounces were introduced to the program in 1991 with a 2 oz and 5 oz version joining in 1996.
The obverse of 1989 1 oz Silver Libertads showcases the Mexican Coat of Arms. This national emblem features a Mexican golden eagle holding a rattlesnake in its beak and talons. The eagle sits atop a prickly pear cactus. Below it is an oak-and-laurel wreath with “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” inscribed at the top of the coin.
The reverse of 1989 Mexican Silver Libertad Coins features Winged Victory. This depiction is in front-facing relief and features Victory striding toward the viewer holding a wreath crown in one hand and broken chains in the other. Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl can be seen in the background.
All 1989 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coins will arrive in protective plastic flips to ensure their preservation. While these coins don’t have a face value they are backed by the Banco de México.
