The Perth Mint introduced the Platinum Koala in 1988 and would continue to issue the coins until 2000. Like other platinum coins, the Australian Platinum Koala was canceled after the 2000 issue due to a drop in demand for platinum bullion.
While the Australian Platinum Koala never gained popularity on the level of the American Platinum Eagle, it is still a coveted coin in the 21st century due to the rising value of platinum and its growing number of uses.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse side of 1989 1 oz Platinum Koala Coins. This effigy of Her Majesty was created in 1985 by Raphael Maklouf and would be used through 1997 on a wide variety of coins. It offers a timeless glimpse of the Queen with the George IV State Diadem Crown.
