The United States Mint launched the American Eagle Coin program in 1986. At that time, there were only a few options. Today, you can get American Eagles in three different finishes, multiple sizes, and even various metal types.
The American Gold Eagles come in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. You can also get the coins in proof, bullion, and uncirculated finishes, but keep in mind that not all finishes are available each year. Finally, American Eagle Coins come in gold, as well as silver, platinum, and palladium. Each of the metal types features unique designs on both the obverse and reverse faces.
Each coin contains 91.67% gold by weight, so each coin contains exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of 22-karat gold. They also include copper and silver. These additions make the coins stronger and more durable.
On the obverse, Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Gold Double Eagle design is proudly showcased. This design was created in 1907 for coins of the same name. In the image, Lady Liberty is depicted as she walks away from the US Capitol building. She has the sun shining directly on her back, and she carries a flaming torch and an olive branch.
The reverse image is that of sculptor Miley Busiek’s bald eagle family design. The image shows a large male eagle as he comes home to the family nest. He is clutching an olive branch between his talons. In the nest, his female mate and hatchling are seen waiting for him.
These coins ship in clear plastic flips directly from our secure facility to your door. The flips are meant to provide protection during shipping, but they are also useful during storage to keep dirt and debris off the surface of the coins.
