Fractional ounces would be added in the Proof Series in 1987 and 1988, with a Burnished Series introduced in 2006.

On the obverse of 1989 American Gold Eagles is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ vision of Lady Liberty from 1907. This historic visual first appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907 and shows Liberty in front-facing relief clutching a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
The reverse side of the 1989 1/2 oz Gold Eagle features a family of bald eagles. Designed exclusively for this series in 1986 by Miley Busiek, this visual shows a male eagle soaring above the nest as a female eagle guards over the hatchlings in the nest.
