American Gold Eagle coins are symbols of American pride and majesty in any precious metals collection. On one side is the image of Lady Liberty, inspired by the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. On the other side, the American bald eagle, which has served as the national emblem for the country since 1792. As deep-cameo proofs, each design set has a strong, frosted finish. This is contrasted by the deeply-mirrored, clear background field. This combination gives the illusion of the design floating above the background.
The American Gold Eagle bears one of the most iconic American coin designs of all time on the obverse face. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was an Irish-American artist and sculptor who had already made a name for himself in American art circles. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt hand-picked Saint-Gaudens to lead the charge in redesigning American gold coinage.
Saint-Gaudens’ design featured a modern (20th century) image of Lady Liberty striding forward as the nation’s guiding light. His creation showed Liberty in a flowing robe with her hair down, free to blow in the wind. With her torch held aloft in her right hand, she marched out of the national capital of Washington DC to lead the nation toward a brighter future.
On the obverse of each American Gold Eagle coin is Saint-Gaudens’ creation. The reverse of all coins in the series feature the image of a family of nesting bald eagles, which was created by Miley Busiek in 1986 for exclusive use on the American Gold Eagle series.
