The Gold Eagles were first introduced in 1986 by the United States Mint. This coin was originally produced in the 1 oz denomination coin, and it wasn’t until 1987 that this coin was issued as a ½ oz denomination by the Philadelphia Mint—which is indicated by the “P” mint mark shown on the coin. This 1988 coin was struck by the Philadelphia Mint and features this special mint mark. The ½ oz denomination was issued from this U.S. Mint location until 1993, when production transitioned to the West Point Mint.
On the obverse of the 1988-P 1/2 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is the image of Lady Liberty. She is shown walking forward toward the viewer with one arm extended and holding a torch. In the other hand, Lady Liberty carries an olive branch. Sun rays extend up behind her to further emphasize her beauty. This image was originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and has been used on many bullion releases from the United States Mint.
