The American Gold Eagle coin program was introduced in 1986 with a bullion and proof version. While the 1 oz coin has been struck every year since by the United States Mint, the fractional weight coins in proof version were not introduced immediately. Right now, you can purchase a 1988-P ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin from JM Bullion in perfect condition.
Coin Highlights
American Gold Eagle bullion coins were available from the first year of production in all four weights, but the ½ oz coin wasn’t available in the proof version until 1987. Although all American Gold Eagle proof coins are now struck at the West Point Mint, coins produced prior to 1994 were struck in Philadelphia.
Each of the coins available through this JM Bullion product listing has a grade of PF70 from the NGC. These coins have their full, original luster, and no blemishes of any kind. Ultra-cameo is a term defining the strong, frosted finish of the design set and the deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
On the obverse side of all American Gold Eagles is the image of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. He was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to revitalize American coin design for gold coinage.
The reverse side features the coins weight, metal content, purity, and face value, along with sculptor Miley Busiek’s depiction of a family of nesting bald eagles. Her image was created in 1986 for use specifically on the American Gold Eagle.
All American Gold Eagles are considered legal tender in the United States, and their purity and metal content are guaranteed by the United States government.
