The UCAM, or ultra-cameo, designation is for proof coins with enhanced visual brilliance. A UCAM coin has strong, frosted designs with deeply-mirrored, clear backgrounds. The combined visual elements give the design the appearance of floating above the coins surface.
1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins were introduced in 1988 along with the 1/4 oz coins, making 1988 the first year that all four weights available in the Gold Eagle series were released in proof. The coins were originally struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 1987 to 1993 in the fractional weights, with the 1 oz coin always struck by the West Point Mint.
In another unique note, all American Gold Eagles struck before 1992 have Roman numerals used in the date marks featured within the sunburst rays behind Libertys figure on the obverse. The P mint mark, in the case of these 1988 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles, is also featured on the obverse.
The image of Lady Liberty appears on the obverse of the 1988 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it features Liberty walking with a torch in her right hand and a large olive branch in her left. On the reverse of the 1988 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagle is Miley Busieks depiction of a family of nesting bald eagles.
