The Chinese Lunar Calendar runs in twelve-year cycles and names each of the twelve years after an animal. Only twelve came to bid him farewell and as a reward, he named a year after each of them in the order they arrived. The Chinese believe the animal ruling the year in which a person is born has a profound influence on personality. They say, ‘This is the animal that hides in your heart.’
For the obverse field of the 1988 1 oz Singapore Lunar Year of the Dragon Gold Coin, you will find the Singapore coat of arms. Its motto translates to Onward Singapore. To its left, you’ll find inscriptions with Thai characters, while on the right there are Chinese characters. Inscribed on the border are the words Singapura and Singapore.
