The Chinese Gold Panda Coin has been available from the Chinese Mint since 1982. When the program was introduced, it offered gold coins for sale in four weights. Each 1988 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin available here is sealed in a plastic pouch. These coins were issued in just the seventh year of availability and feature not only the historic 1 Troy oz gold weight but also the original face value assigned to the coins.
In 2001 and 2016, the Chinese Mint made two changes to the Chinese Gold Pandas. The first change, in 2001, saw the face value rise from the 100 Yuan mark on these 1988 Gold Pandas to the current face value of 500 Yuan. In 2016, the mint adjusted the coin’s from 1 Troy oz gold to 30 Grams gold.
Obverse design elements on these 1988 Chinese Gold Panda Coins include a depiction of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This design has been featured on the obverse of the Gold Pandas since the 1982 debut of the program. It offers a view of the building’s front door from the exterior stairs.
Reverse visuals on these 1988 1 oz Gold Panda Coins include a unique depiction of the Giant Panda. Here, the panda is seated on its hind legs as it reaches for a bamboo shoot with its front-left paw.
