An interesting adaptation the Giant Panda has developed is its “sixth digit” – an enlarged wrist bone that functions as an opposable thumb. This extra digit allows pandas to grasp and manipulate bamboo stems with remarkable dexterity as they feed. Pandas spend up to 14 hours per day feeding, consuming over 20 pounds of bamboo daily to meet their energy needs.
