The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf was introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988, debuting at the same time as the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf. The Platinum Maple Leaf has a unique minting history and the first two issues stand out as the only ones in the series with the 2nd generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Right now, 1988 1/10 oz Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Coins are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1988 1/10 oz Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Coin offered here comes with a protective plastic flip. This 1988 Platinum Maple Leaf represents the first year of availability for the Platinum Maple Leaf Series. Platinum Maples debuted in 1988 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins, options that were available annually through 1995, with additional strikes in 1999 and 2002. Since 2009, this series has offered only 1 oz platinum coins.
When the Platinum Maple Leaf Coin debuted in 1988, the Royal Canadian Mint featured Arnold Machin’s effigy of a 39-year-old Queen Elizabeth II. Machin originally created this portrait for The Royal Mint’s British coinage in 1965. This effigy would prove to be a foundational piece for British postage stamps, commemorative coins, and circulation currency. It captures Elizabeth II’s regal, yet approachable demeanor as a young monarch.
The obverse of 1988 Canadian Platinum Maple Leafs comes with Machin’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief against a clean background field with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head. This was the final British-designed portrait of Elizabeth II to feature on Canadian coins, with 1990 marking the first time a Canadian artist would create an effigy of Her Majesty for Canadian coins.
On the reverse of 1988 1/10 oz Platinum Maple Leaf Coins, you will find the original sugar maple leaf design. Created in 1979 by Walter Ott, this image of a sugar maple leaf was first used on the Gold Maple Leaf Series and has since appeared on all silver, platinum, and palladium variants.
