The Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests features on gold and silver versions of the coin in all weights. This design debuted in 1982 and depicts the largest building in the Temple of Heaven complex.
For the reverse of the 1987-Y Chinese Gold Panda, the mint features a unique 1987 design. In this image, a giant panda is shown standing next to a small body of water with bamboo shoots emerging from the soil nearby. The panda is depicted lowering its head to drink from the pond, with the contact of its mouth creating small ripples on the surface of the pond.
The Giant Panda species predominantly inhabits the mountainous regions of China, including the Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. These regions of the country are home to bamboo forests, providing the primary food source for pandas. Additionally, the density of the forests and the high altitudes of the region provide an ecosystem with cool temperatures and relative isolation from human populations.
