Deep-cameo coins are identified by the brilliant contrast between design sets and background fields. On these particular proofs, the designs of Lady Liberty (obverse) and the bald eagle (reverse) have a strong, frosted matte finish. The background fields on both sides are deeply-mirrored and clear.
On the obverse of each coin you’ll find the image of Lady Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Originally used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, this is considered the greatest design in the history of American currency. Unfortunately, Saint-Gaudens died just months before the US Mint released the Double Eagle coins.
The reverse features the image of the nation’s official emblem, the bald eagle. In Miley Busiek’s creation, a male bald eagle is shown flying over the nest with its wings outstretched. Down below, a female eagle stands vigilant guard over the nest and its hatchlings.
All American Gold Eagle proof coins are now made exclusively at the West Point Mint, regardless of weight or version. Originally, proof specimens in fractional weights were struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
