Proof American Gold Eagles are one of two versions of the coin introduced in 1986. The program originally consisted of a bullion and proof coin, with 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz coins available. All four weights are still available, and an uncirculated coin was added to the series in 2006 to mark the 20th anniversary of the program.
Each coin available in this product listing is from the second year of production, and comes with a perfect grade of PF70. These coins all have their full, original luster, and no blemishes or detracting flaws. Ultra-cameo coins are characterized by frosted design sets that appear to float over deeply-mirrored background fields.
On the obverse side of each coin is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Lady Liberty. Saint-Gaudens was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to revive gold American coins in 1907, and this image of Liberty was the result of his efforts. It first appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle before being resurrected for this series.
The reverse side of each coin bears Miley Busiek’s image of a family of bald eagles in its nest. The coin’s weight, metal content, purity, and face value are all included on this side of the coin.
