Initially, the San Francisco Mint was responsible for the production of American Silver Eagles, both the BU and Proof coins. It struck the Proof Silver Eagles from 1986 to 1992, but struck the BU Silver Eagles from 1986 to 1998.
The obverse of the 1987-S Proof American Silver Eagle comes with a depiction of Walking Liberty. Designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, this full-length depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief shows her figure walking toward the sun on the horizon with the branches of oak and laurel in her hands.
On the reverse side of 1987-S 1 oz Proof Silver Eagles is a modern depiction of the heraldic eagle. The design was modified in 1986 by John Mercanti for the debut of this series and it shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield on its chest. The bird clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons.
