On the reverse side of 1987-S 1 oz Proof Silver Eagles is a modern depiction of the heraldic eagle. The design was modified in 1986 by John Mercanti for the debut of this series and it shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield on its chest. The bird clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons.
