The Chinese Gold Panda Series began in 1982 and has been issued annually by the Chinese Mint. Unlike most sovereign mint coin programs, the reverse image of the panda is updated with every new release (except for 2001 and 2002.) In 2016, the Chinese Mint made a drastic change to the series by making a switch from Troy oz of grams.
The Hall of Prayers in the Temple of Heaven is located on the obverse side of the 1987 Proof Chinese Gold Panda Coin. This structure has appeared on the obverse of every coin in the overall series. At the top, we can see a Chinese inscription for “The People’s Republic of China” while the year of issue is at the bottom.
Two pandas in a tree are displayed on the reverse side of the 1987 5 oz Proof Chinese Panda Coin. While one panda is clinging to the trunk of a tree, the other is hanging on to a branch. In the distance, we can see a large body of water and another tree. To the right of the pandas are inscriptions about the coin.
