The Proof Gold Eagle made a unique debut in 1986 and is the most highly regarded coin in the proof series as it represents the first date mark in the long-running collection. Coin Highlights:
Each of the 1986-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins listed here comes with the original packaging from the United States Mint. Proof Gold Eagles are packaged individually inside display boxes from the US Mint and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. As proof coins, you will notice frosted designs over mirror-like background fields.
The 1986-W Proof American Gold Eagle was unique between the two versions offered in 1986 when the series launched. The Brilliant Uncirculated coins were available that year with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. Only these 1 oz gold coins were offered in the 1986 Proof Gold Eagle release. Furthermore, this coin had the highest mintage in the history of the series at 446,290 coins. The next highest mintage in this weight, and in the proof series overall, is the 1987 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle. That coin had a mintage of nearly 300,000 fewer coins.
Lady Liberty features on the obverse of 1986-W Proof Gold Eagle Coins. This historic design was originally created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin from the US Mint until 1933. It depicts Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer holding aloft a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
A family of bald eagles is found in the reverse design of the 1986-W 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle. This design was exclusive to the Gold Eagle Series and was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek. It shows a female eagle in the nest with a hatchling as a male eagle soars overhead with a branch in its talons.
