The most coveted collectible silver bullion coin from the United States Mint is the Proof American Silver Eagle. These coins are available alongside the Burnished American Silver Eagle, but the Proof Silver Eagle has been available much longer and debuted in 1986 with the bullion version of the coin. Proof American Silver Eagle coins feature the same designs as the bullion version of the coin. However, each proof coin has more beautiful visuals courtesy of the matte design elements and the mirrored appearance of the background field. Proof American Silver Eagle Coins feature mint marks from the issuing mint.
Proof Silver Eagles from the United States Mint include an “S” mint mark for date marks 1986 to 1992. Coins issued from 1993 to 2000 bear the Philadelphia Mint’s “P” mint mark. All coins issued from 2001 onward have the “W” mint mark of the West Point Mint.
All of these 33-Coin Sets include each release in the Proof American Silver Eagle Series from 1986 to 2019. Each coin comes with its own Certificate of Authenticity and there are no 2009 coins in the series. The United States Mint did not issue Proof Silver Eagles in 2009 amidst the crush for silver bullion coins as all silver blanks were directed toward bullion production.
On the obverse of all 1986-2019 Proof American Silver Eagle Coins is the design of Walking Liberty. Created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, the image originally appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin from 1916 to 1947.
The reverse side of Proof American Silver Eagle Coins includes the image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. A design as old as the United States Mint itself, this version was modernized in 1986 for the Silver Eagle by John Mercanti. Each one includes an American bald eagle behind the national heraldic shield.
