Each 1985 $100 Canada National Parks Centenary Coin was struck in 22-karat gold by The Royal Canadian Mint. The coins celebrate the centennial of Banff National Park and are part of the mint’s 100 Dollar Coin Collection that launched in 1976. These coins are considered proof strikes, which means carefully selected planchets were struck multiple times with specially polished dies. The result gives the fields a mirrored quality and the devices a frosted appearance. Upon arrival, you will find your coin housed in a special slab from NGC that includes the grading details.
The obverse of 1985 Canada National Parks Centenary Gold Coins contains a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In this design from Arnold Manchin, we see the Queen facing right and wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This portrait was approved in 1964 and appeared on Canadian coinage between 1965 and 1989. The inscriptions along the edge read Elizabeth II, D G Regina, Canada.
On the reverse side of 1985 $100 National Parks Centenary Gold Coins there is a Bighorn mountain sheep design. This majestic image is credited to Hector Greville and features the sheep on mountainous terrain facing to the right. Inscriptions are shown across the border reading 100 Dollars, 1985 National Parks, 1985 Nationaux Parcs.
