The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is the official gold bullion coin of the government of Canada and is issued annually by the Royal Canadian Mint. Introduced in 1979, it is one of the longest-running gold bullion programs. It is also one of the most diverse, offering coins in various weights and across four precious metal variants. Today, 1985 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Canadian Gold Maple Leafs were introduced in stages at first, with the 1 oz gold coin the first one issued back in 1979. In 1982, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins were introduced, followed by 1/2 oz (1986), 1/20 oz (1993), and 1 Gram (2014) coins. Early Gold Maple Leafs featured a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created in 1965 by Arnold Machin. This was the last effigy of Her Majesty designed by a British artist to feature on Canadian coins.
All 1985 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins come with a protective plastic flip. The coins feature 24-karat gold content, with Gold Maple Leafs being the first major gold bullion program to offer 24-karat gold (1982).
On the obverse of 1985 Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, you will find the second-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 1965 by Arnold Machin, this portrait of a young Elizabeth II was first used on British currency and debuted on the Gold Maple Leaf in 1979. It would be used until 1989, when it was later replaced, in 1990, by the first-ever portrait of Her Majesty by a Canadian artist.
The reverse of 1985 1/4 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins comes with a depiction of a sugar maple leaf. Walter Ott designed this visual in 1979 for the Gold Maple Leaf Series and it has gone on to feature on all silver, platinum, and palladium coins in the collection as well.
