This design was created in 1965 by Arnold Machin for British and Commonwealth coinage. It features a 39-year-old Elizabeth II in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
For the reverse side of 1982 Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, you will find the iconic sugar maple leaf. Designed for this series just three years earlier in 1979, it depicts a natural sugar maple leaf. Walter Ott created this visual for the mint and it was subsequently used on all weights across the Gold, Silver, Platinum, and Palladium Maple Leaf Series.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the sugar maple leaf serves crucial biological functions for the tree. Its broad surface area efficiently captures sunlight for photosynthesis, while the lobed structure allows for effective heat dissipation and resilience against wind damage. The leaf’s petiole (stem) contains specialized cells that initiate abscission in autumn, creating a clean separation from the branch as the tree prepares for winter dormancy.
