The Mexican Gold Libertad is one of the most beautiful coins in the modern bullion market. Introduced in 1981, the coin is based on a historic Mexican gold coin that debuted 60 years earlier in honor of the centennial of Mexican independence from Spain. Today, 1981 1/2 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are available online at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Mexican Mint introduced Gold Libertads in 1981. This first year of issue would mark the start of the program, but not the start of annual production as the coins would not be issued again for another decade when five weights (instead of the initial three) were introduced in 1991. As of 2002, the Mexican Mint strikes Gold Libertads on an annual basis in five weights.
All 1981 1/2 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are available here with protective plastic flips. The 1981 debut issue of Gold Libertads featured 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz gold coins, with these 1/2 oz gold coins representing the lowest mintage among the three coins offered.
In the obverse design of the 1981 Mexican Gold Libertad, the Mexican Mint features the modern coat of arms of Mexico. The design on this field features a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus. The eagle is shown in left-profile relief as it does battle with a serpent using its beak and talons. A wreath of oak and laurel leaves encircles the bottom half of the design element.
The central element of the Mexican coat of arms, an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a snake, comes from an Aztec legend. This legend tells of the god Huitzilopochtli instructing the Aztecs to build their city where they saw an eagle eating a snake while perched on a cactus.
For the reverse side of 1981 1/2 oz Gold Libertad Coins, you will find the historic image of Winged Victory. Introduced in 1921 on the Gold Centenario coin, this close-up design captures the front-facing image of Winged Victory as featured at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City.
