Congressional bills authorizing the production of U.S. bicentennial coins were introduced as early as 1971. Once the legislation was passed, a competition was held for the designs of a new quarter, half-dollar, and dollar. While the obverse designs would remain the same, the reverse artwork was completely new for the 1975-76 releases. Though the bicentennial coins were minted during both years, all coins under this label simply feature a dual 1776-1976 date. As such, it is impossible to tell which specific year the coins were minted.
The obverse of 1976-S Silver Kennedy Half Dollars features a portrait of John F. Kennedy. This design is credited to Gilroy Roberts and originally debuted in 1964. The portrait has a simplified, neo-classical quality as it features the former President in left-profile relief. Inscriptions are included that read Liberty, In God We Trust, 1776-1976.
On the reverse side of 1976-S 40% Silver Half Dollars a rendering of Independence Hall is featured. This historic building is located in Philadelphia and was a crucial location for the drafting of both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. The design is credited to Seth Huntington.
