To help fund its responsibilities as host nation of the Games of the 21st Olympiad, the Royal Canadian Mint and Government of Canada issued commemorative coins. These coins were issued over seven series between 1973 and 1976, concluding with the release of two gold coins for sale. Coin Highlights:
The 1976 Summer Olympics were officially the Games of the 21st Olympiad, a count that takes into consideration only the modern games restarted in 1896. This was the first time that Canada had hosted the games and remains the only time that Canada has hosted the summer version of the Olympic Games.
As part of its celebration, the Government of Canada and Royal Canadian Mint issued commemorative coins. This included the release of 28 silver coin designs and 2 gold coin designs. The gold coin series proved confusing for some buyers as the original release included a 1/4 oz BU specimen with 14-karat gold and a $100 (CAD) face value, as well as these 1/4 oz Proof gold coins with 22-karat gold and same $100 (CAD) face value.
On the obverse side of each 1976 $100 1/2 oz Proof Canadian Gold Olympic Coin is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This was the second-generation design of Her Majesty to feature on British and Commonwealth coinage during her reign. Designed by Arnold Machin, the image was featured on Canadian coins from 1965 to 1989. It depicts a young image of the Queen wearing her favored Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
The reverse field of 1976 1/2 oz Proof Canadian Gold Olympic Coins comes with an image of an Ancient Greek Olympian. This victorious figure is shown standing with the goddess Pallus Athena by his side as she extends an arm to crown him with a laurel wreath.
These 1976 $100 1/2 oz Proof Canadian Gold Olympic Coins are available to you for purchase online with protective boxes and a Certificate of Authenticity. Each coin has 22-karat gold content that equates to 91.67% gold fineness within the specimen. As a proof coin, you will notice frosted designs with mirror-like fields.
