The 1970 US Mint Set is a unique option among the US Mint’s uncirculated sets from the era. Of particular note in this set is the 1970 Kennedy Half Dollar, the last of its kind to feature any amount of silver in the metal content of the coin. Today, 1970 US Mint Sets are available online from JM Bullion.
Coin Set Highlights:
In the 1970 US Mint Set, the Kennedy Half Dollar is a standout piece. First and foremost, 1970 Kennedy Half Dollars were only available as part of US Mint Sets. Secondly, the 1970 Kennedy Half Dollar was the last one issued with 40% silver content. The next year, the Kennedy Half Dollar transitioned to the cupro-nickel alloy the US Mint adopted in 1965 for the dime and quarter.
All 1970 US Mint Sets contain two cellophane packages with five coins each. The set features a total of 10 coins representing each of the major denominations of American coinage: penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and half dollar. The sets are packaged in an outer envelope, but please note that some sets may be missing the outer envelope. All sets feature cellophane packaging with coins in good condition.
The inclusion of 10 coins in this set represents each mint that struck the respective denominations. As such, there Lincoln Pennies from the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints, Jefferson Nickels from the Denver and San Francisco Mints, with Roosevelt Dimes and Washington Quarters from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The Kennedy Half Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint.
