The current design on the US half-dollar coin is that of President John F. Kennedy. Assassinated while in office in November 1963, President Kennedy was so beloved that the US Mint moved quickly to adopt an effigy of the fallen leader to grace the surface of circulation American coins. The half-dollar coin was chosen and a new design was on the coin within months of his death. The 1964 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollar Coin is now available to you for purchase online from JM Bullion in a $1 (USD) face value offering.
Coin Highlights:
Prior to the Kennedy Half Dollar, the US 50-cent piece included the effigy of Founding Father and American diplomat Benjamin Franklin. The Franklin design likely would have gone on to be used for several more years or even decades had President Kennedy not been assassinated while in office in November 1963. It took the United States Mint just five months from Kennedy’s death to the point where new half dollars were ready for release.
Beginning in March 1964, the United States Mint issued 90% Silver Half Dollar coins with a bust of President John F. Kennedy. The swift change of designs was made capable by the existence of a design already approved by none other than President Kennedy earlier in his term. Frank Gasparro and Gilroy Roberts had produced images of the president and a presidential seal in 1962 for use on the Presidential Medal available for Kennedy’s administration.
On the obverse of 1964 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollar Coins is the image of President John F. Kennedy in left-profile relief. It includes inscriptions of “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and the date mark of “1964.”
The reverse face of 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar Coins includes a modified version of the Seal of the President of the United States of America. The bird has radiating glory Or behind it with an arc of 13 cloud puffs at the top. The bird has the heraldic shield of the United States on its chest, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other.
1964 was the last year in which circulation half-dollar coins were produced with 90% silver. The remainder of the coin is a 10% copper base. The Kennedy Half Dollar is the only one in the long history of half dollars to offer just one year of 90% silver before the shift to 40% silver, and eventually the modern cupro-nickel format.
