The Jefferson nickel was first produced in 1938, its design a response to difficulties the minting technology of the day had with striking its predecessor coin, the so-called Buffalo nickel. That design, originally created by the German-born sculptor Felix Schlag, would be adjusted in several ways over the years but remains the basis for the American nickel to this day. The predecessor to the Jefferson nickel, called the Buffalo nickel, had been an attempt by designer James Earle Fraser to render a distinctively American coin design using the image of the great beast that once dominated the plains. It was struck for twenty-five years before difficulties in the minting process drove the search for a fresh but just as distinctively American design, which led to the choice of the republic’s third President and his famous manor.
