For decades, the United States Mint has issued proof sets to coin collectors who love the designs of American coins. The 1961 US Mint Proof Set offered up coins from existing circulation that year, but with images that were struck in proof. Known as Envelope Sets, these coins were packaged in sealed plastic with envelopes housing the coins that identified the mint that issued the coins. Right now, 1961 US Mint Proof Sets are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

Each of the 1961 US Mint Proof Sets available here comes with all the original shipping pieces from the United States Mint. The US Mint packaged the coins inside of a sealed plastic sheet that has each coin in its own sealed space. The set features a 1961-dated US penny, US nickel, US dime, US quarter, and US half dollar. There is also a small octagonal piece identifying the Philadelphia Mint as the mint of origin. The coins and sealed plastic sheet ship in a manila envelope with the Treasury Department and US Mint name printed.
Please note that the coins in this 1961 US Mint Proof Set are all struck in proof, with frosted designs and mirror-like fields. The dime, quarter, and half dollar are all struck on 90% silver blanks for a total of .61 Troy oz of silver in this release. Those particular coins have 10% copper, while the nickel and penny have their respective metallic alloys for metal content. Also, please note that the envelopes the US Mint originally shipped these sets in may show wear and tear due to the age of the set. All of the sets, with envelopes, will ship in a protective shipping sleeve from JM Bullion.
Obverse designs on these coins include varying designs of American dignitaries from the nation’s history. Abraham Lincoln features on the penny in a 1909 design, while Thomas Jefferson features on the nickel with a 1939 design. Franklin D. Roosevelt is found on the dime in a 1946 design. George Washington’s effigy is found on the quarter in a 1932 design, while Benjamin Franklin, the only non-president, features on the half dollar in a 1948 design.
Reverse visuals on the coins of the 1961 US Mint Proof Set vary from one coin to the next. For example, the heraldic eagle is on the reverse of the quarter, while the Liberty Bell features alongside a small heraldic eagle privy on the half dollar.
