The Booker T. Washington Half Dollar is a notable commemorative half dollar from the United States Mint. The coin was designed by Isaac Scott Hathaway and was the first US coin designed by an African-American artist. The Booker T. Washington Half Dollar is incredibly hard to find in MS67 grade, with only 6,004 coins produced at the Philadelphia Mint and only 55 graded MS67 by the PCGS. Today, 1950 Booker T. Born into slavery in Virginia around 1856, Booker T. Washington emerged as one of the most influential African American leaders of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After emancipation, he worked his way through Hampton Institute and later founded Tuskegee Institute in Alabama in 1881, where he championed vocational education and economic self-reliance for African Americans.
This 1950 Booker T. Washington Half Dollar is in Mint State 67 condition. The average coin with this grade has original mint luster with three or four minuscule contact marks, one or two of which may be in the primary focal fields. This particular coin is a rare specimen, with only 55 Philadelphia Mint issues graded MS67 and only 13 others graded higher.
On the obverse of Booker T. Washington Half Dollars is a portrait of Booker T. Washington. His philosophy of gradual progress through education and economic advancement, famously articulated in his 1895 Atlanta Compromise speech, made him a powerful but sometimes controversial figure who believed that demonstrating economic value and practical skills would eventually lead to full civil rights for Black Americans.
The reverse of the 1950 Booker T. Washington Half Dollar Coin comes with an image of a log cabin and the Hall of Fame for Great Americans. The design showcases the log cabin where Washington was born, while the latter shows how far he came from his early life in slavery to having a lasting impact on the nation.
