The obverse of the 1944-D Mercury Dime shows Liberty in a youthful, left-facing profile, wearing a winged Phrygian cap intended to symbolize freedom of thought. Weinman’s design is recognized for its detailed craftsmanship, including Liberty’s flowing hair and the carefully sculpted wings of the cap. “LIBERTY” appears along the rim, while “IN GOD WE TRUST” is positioned near the neck, with the date shown below.
The reverse of the 1944-D Mercury Dime features a Roman fasces, symbolizing unity and strength through the binding of the states. An olive branch rests across the fasces, representing peace alongside national strength. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “ONE DIME” frame the design, underscoring its symbolic importance during the wartime years.
The 1944-D Mercury Dime from Denver represents wartime production with an enormous mintage of 62,224,000 pieces, one of the highest in the entire series.
