Weinman’s Walking Liberty design was created in 1916 as the US Mint worked to revitalize the visuals on its major silver denominations. Not only was Weinman’s Walking Liberty design chosen for the Half Dollar that year, but his Winged Liberty design was also chosen for the Dime at the same time. Both would go on to feature on US denominations through the mid-1940s.
The obverse of the 1943 Walking Liberty Half Dollar comes with Weinman’s iconic image of Lady Liberty. The design shows Liberty’s full-length figure in left-profile relief with the American flag draped around her flowing robes. Her right hand is extended as she walks toward the sun on the horizon.
On the reverse of 1943 Walking Liberty Half Dollars, you will find an American bald eagle. Also designed by Weinman, the image shows an adult bald eagle perched on a mountaintop as it raises its wings in anticipation of taking flight. The design includes an oak branch in the talons of the eagle.
