Debuting in 1916, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar was introduced during the Roosevelt administration’s effort to refresh and improve American coin designs. The new series replaced the Barber Half Dollar after it completed its required 25-year run. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar soon earned widespread appreciation for its clean lines and symbolic detail. This 1943-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar offers a strong MS66 certification with bright, frosted eye appeal. Now, the 1943-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar is available online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
This 1943-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar is a Mint State 66 specimen with blast-white surfaces and vivid cartwheel luster on both sides, as well as a pleasing contrast between the devices and the background fields. The coin has a crisp design relief and well-defined, bold details. MS66 coins have no more than three or four minor contact marks and hairlines that are only visible with the aid of magnification.
The obverse of the 1943-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar shows Liberty walking confidently toward a rising sun, draped in the American flag. Her right arm reaches outward, while laurel and oak branches are held in her left arm to symbolize peace and military strength. “LIBERTY” is inscribed to the right of the design, with “IN GOD WE TRUST” appearing beneath Liberty’s arm. The date is positioned at the bottom.
The reverse of the 1943-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar depicts an American eagle standing on a mountain crag with wings partially extended. A young pine tree grows from the rocky ground below the eagle. Surrounding the design are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “HALF DOLLAR,” while “E PLURIBUS UNUM” appears in small lettering near the pine branch.
The 1943-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar, with a mintage of 13,450,000 pieces, represents one of the higher production years for the San Francisco Mint as wartime demand for coinage intensified. This date is relatively available in circulated conditions, but becomes more challenging to locate with strong strikes and original luster in mint state grades.
