First minted in 1916, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar was introduced during the Roosevelt administration’s initiative to redesign and improve the nation’s coinage. It replaced the Barber Half Dollar after that series completed its required 25-year run. Sculpted by Adolph A. Weinman, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar soon became one of the most recognizable designs of its era. This 1942 Walking Liberty Half Dollar has a stunning PF67+ certification with beautiful proof visuals. Today, the 1942 Walking Liberty Half Dollar is available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
In 1942, the United States Mint, along with much of the broader American economy, transitioned into a wartime mode of operation. As the United States became increasingly involved in World War II, the nation’s coinage was affected in several different ways. One of the most noticeable changes was the suspension of proof coin production as the conflict continued. Many proof coin programs would not resume until 1950.
This 1942 Walking Liberty Half Dollar has an impressive PF67+ certification. The coin displays exceptional preservation and eye appeal. Both sides are bright, with essentially no toning present. There is a frosted luster on both sides that accents the sharply rendered devices. The surfaces of the coin are clean and radiant, with a good balance between texture and relief.
The obverse of the 1942 Walking Liberty Half Dollar depicts Liberty striding toward a rising sun, draped in the American flag. Her right arm reaches forward, while laurel and oak branches rest in her left arm, representing civil and military honor. The inscription “LIBERTY” appears to the right, with “IN GOD WE TRUST” placed beneath Liberty’s arm. The date is shown at the bottom.
The reverse of the 1942 Walking Liberty Half Dollar displays a bald eagle standing on a rocky mountain ledge with its wings partially spread. A pine sapling grows from the stone below the eagle. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “HALF DOLLAR” frame the design, while “E PLURIBUS UNUM” appears in small lettering near the pine branch.
