Adolph A. Weinman’s Winged Liberty design, used on the Mercury Dime, stands as one of the most iconic in American history. The 1942 Proof Mercury Dime is an exceptional specimen and was the last Proof US Dime issued by the US Mint until after 1950. Only 22,329 of these 1942 Proof Mercury Dimes were issued, and surviving specimens are scarce in high-quality grades. In fact, the PCGS reports only 20 coins graded higher than PR68. Today, the 1942 Proof Mercury Dime in PF68 condition is available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Mercury Dime was introduced in 1916 as the US Mint replaced the famed Barber Coinage, a series of designs created by 6th US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber for the Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar. Adolph A. Weinman’s artistic creations replaced the Dime and Half Dollar visuals, with his famous Winged Liberty design gracing the Dime from 1916 to 1945.
This 1942 Proof Mercury Dime is available in PF68 condition. A rarity among 1942 Proof Mercury Dimes, these specimens have a beautiful, sharp strike and full original luster. There are no more than four minuscule contact marks with no visual flaws in the primary focal areas. No hairlines are visible.
On the obverse of the 1942 Proof Mercury Dime is Weinman’s famous portrait of Winged Liberty. This left-profile relief depicts Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. The coin became known as the Mercury Dime because the American public instantly associated Weinman’s Winged Liberty portrait with the Roman messenger god, Mercury.
The reverse of 1942 Proof Mercury Dimes features a simple design. A Roman fasces is depicted in the center of the design with an olive branch wrapped around the rod. Historically, a fasces is simply a bound bundle of wooden rods, but the Romans elevated this emblem to a symbol of power.
