The Washington Quarter made its debut in 1932 as part of the United States Mint’s effort to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. Though originally intended as a one-year commemorative release, the coin was met with widespread approval. This popularity led to its adoption as the standard quarter-dollar design, replacing the Standing Liberty Quarter that had been in use since 1916. This 1941-S Washington Quarter offers a stunning Mint State 67 condition. Today, the 1941-S Washington Quarter is available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The 1941-S Washington Quarter from San Francisco was produced with a mintage of 16,080,000 pieces during the final year before America’s entry into World War II. Bearing the “S” mintmark on the reverse, this issue represents typical San Francisco Mint production quality of the era and is notably scarcer than its Philadelphia counterpart. The coin circulated extensively during wartime, and examples showing original mint luster are particularly sought after by collectors focusing on pre-war San Francisco coinage.
This 1941-S Washington Quarter is a beautiful specimen from the San Francisco Mint and boasts a Mint State 67 certification. Coins in this condition have original luster and a normal strike for the date, with exceptional eye appeal. The coin may have three or four very small contact marks with one more noticeable mark that is not considered detracting. One or two small, single hairlines may show, but only with the aid of magnification.
John Flanagan designed the obverse of the 1941-S Washington Quarter, featuring a left-facing bust of George Washington. His design was modeled after a 1786 sculpture by French artist Jean-Antoine Houdon, long considered an accurate portrayal of Washington. The portrait presents Washington in a composed and formal manner, emphasizing his strong facial structure and leadership qualities. The inscription “LIBERTY” arches above the portrait, with “IN GOD WE TRUST” positioned to the left and the date placed below, resulting in a classic and well-proportioned layout.
The reverse design of the 1941-S Washington Quarter, also by Flanagan, displays a heraldic eagle with wings extended, standing on a bundle of arrows. Olive branches flank the arrows on both sides, adding depth to the symbolism. The eagle faces left, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” appearing above and “QUARTER DOLLAR” below. Together, the imagery conveys a balance between military preparedness and peaceful intentions, reflecting values associated with Washington’s presidency.
