Coin Highlights:
The Mercury Dime was introduced in 1916 and designed by Adolph A. Weinman, who also created the well-known Walking Liberty design featured on the US Half Dollar during the same period. Though officially referred to as the Winged Liberty design, the Mercury Dime earned its popular nickname from the public due to Liberty’s resemblance to Mercury, the Roman messenger god, as she is shown wearing a winged Phrygian cap.
This 1941-S Mercury Dime Coin is in Mint State 68 condition. The traditional MS68 coin has full, original mint luster with three or four minuscule contact marks located outside the primary focal points. This particular coin has Full Bands and crisply struck devices.
On the obverse of 1941 Mercury Dimes, Weinman’s Winged Liberty design presents Liberty in left-profile relief. She wears a winged Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom of thought. This design remained in use from its debut in 1916 until 1945, at which point it was succeeded by a portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The reverse design of 1941-S Mercury Dime Coins includes an olive branch, paired with a central depiction of a fasces. The fasces, an ancient Roman symbol representing a magistrate’s authority, appears wrapped in rods and is accompanied by the olive branch to reflect the dual themes of strength and peace.
