The Mercury Dime is an example of the exemplary coin design and artistry at the United States Mint in the early 20th century. Introduced in 1916, the coin is a beloved piece of 20th-century American coinage. This 1937-S Mercury Dime is one of only ten specimens from its date certified at this level by the NGC, with none graded higher. This makes this coin an elite piece from the original 9.74 million coins produced. Right now, a 1937-S Mercury Dime with an FB designation is available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
This 1937-S Mercury Dime Coin is in Mint State 68 condition with full, original mint luster and no more than four minor contact marks. This particular coin has frosted, unblemished fields with brilliant, silver-white luster and no trace of toning. The FB designation indicates the coins have a fully struck band.
Mercury Dimes were designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916, at the same time that he created the beloved Walking Liberty design for the US Half Dollar. The Mercury Dime was officially known as the Winged Liberty design, but Weinman’s depiction of Liberty with a winged Phrygian cap reminded the American public of the Roman deity Mercury, the messenger god.
Winged Liberty is found on the obverse of 1937 Mercury Dimes. This image shows Liberty in left-profile relief with a winged Phrygian cap on her head. Weinman’s design was created in 1916 and used through 1945 before being replaced by an effigy of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
An olive branch is featured in the reverse design of 1937-S Mercury Dime Coins. This design showcases a fasces at the center, an ancient symbol of a magistrate’s power that arose during the Roman Empire, and shows the fasces surrounded by an olive branch.
