The Walking Liberty design from Adolph A. Weinman is considered one of America’s two greatest Liberty designs alongside Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty of the same era in the early 20th century. This 1937 Proof Walking Liberty Half Dollar is a beautiful example of the US Mint’s proof artistry in the mid-20th century. This piece has a crisp strike with vivid surface areas and sharply defined details. Today, the 1937 Proof Walking Liberty Half Dollar in PF68 condition is available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman was introduced in 1916 as part of the United States Mint’s effort to refresh the imagery featured on its major silver coins. That same year, Weinman’s artwork was selected for two denominations: his Walking Liberty design appeared on the Half Dollar, while his Winged Liberty design was chosen for the Dime. Both designs remained in circulation on their respective coins through the mid-20th century.
This 1937 Proof Walking Liberty Half Dollar is a PF68 specimen with full, original mint luster and just three or four minuscule contact marks, none of which appear in the prime focal areas. This specimen boasts satin-frosted devices with mirrored background fields. The peripheral toning around the edges delivers subtle hues of gold and amber. Only 40 coins in the 1937 Proof Walking Liberty Series earned this PF68 certification!
On the obverse of the 1937 Proof Walking Liberty Half Dollar, Weinman’s celebrated depiction of Liberty is featured. This design presents a full-length image of Liberty in left-profile relief, with the American flag draped across her shoulders and robes. She strides confidently toward the rising sun on the horizon, her right hand outstretched in a gesture of optimism and progress.
The reverse of the 1937 Proof Walking Liberty Half Dollar showcases an American bald eagle. Also designed by Weinman, this reverse image captures a bald eagle perched atop a rocky outcrop. The eagle’s wings are raised as if preparing to take flight, and it clutches an oak branch in its talons, symbolizing strength and endurance.
