From 1935 to 1939, the US Mint issued a commemorative Arkansas Half Dollar to mark the centennial of the state’s admission to the Union. The 1937-D Arkansas Centennial Half Dollar had a low mintage of just 5,505 coins, and the vintage coin in this listing offers a vibrant surface luster that is rare among the Arkansas Centennial Coins. Today, the 1937-D Arkansas Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar in MS67 condition is available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Arkansas was admitted to the Union on June 15, 1836, becoming the 25th state. The territory had been organized in 1819 from part of the Missouri Territory, and its path to statehood was relatively smooth compared to some other states of the era. Arkansas’s admission helped balance regional representation in Congress during a time of growing tensions between North and South.
This 1937-D Arkansas Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar is in MS67 condition. Traditional MS67 coins have original mint luster with three or four minuscule contact marks, one or two of which may appear in the primary focal points. This specific coin has a high-relief strike with soft, silver patina throughout and warm amber toning around the edges. The reverse boasts light gold tones and subtle rose-orange toning. This coin is part of an extremely scarce surviving group. With an original mintage of 5,505 coins, only 43 achieved this MS67 grade, and just 13 with a higher grade.
On the obverse of 1937-D Arkansas Commemorative Half Dollar, you’ll find two figures in left-profile relief. The figure in the background is an indigenous chieftain wearing a ceremonial headdress. In the foreground, Liberty is depicted with a Phrygian cap on her head. The date of Arkansas’s admission to the Union and its centennial date are engraved on this side.
The reverse side of the 1937-D Arkansas Centennial Half Dollar features the central elements of the Arkansas state flag. The design elements include an American bald eagle in the foreground with the state name and four stars at the center.
