The United States Mint introduced the Buffalo Nickel in 1913, ending the production of the Liberty Head nickel that had been issued since 1883. The obverse of the 1936-S Buffalo Nickel presents a right-facing profile portrait of a Native American chief, featuring braided hair and feathers. Fraser stated that the portrait combined elements from Iron Tail, Two Moons, and John Big Tree, though this claim has been questioned over the years. “LIBERTY” is inscribed to the left of the portrait, with the date placed below.
The reverse design of the 1936-S Buffalo Nickel shows an American bison standing on a raised mound, representing the animals native to the western plains. Fraser modeled the bison after Black Diamond, which resided at the Central Park Zoo in New York. The inscription “FIVE CENTS” appears along the lower edge, joined by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
The 1936-S Buffalo Nickel, minted in San Francisco as indicated by the “S” mint mark, represents one of the final years of this beloved design. With a mintage of just over 14 million pieces, it stands as one of the more available San Francisco issues from the series. Collectors particularly value well-struck examples showing complete horn details on the bison and sharp features on the Native American portrait.
