For the reverse side of the 1936 Columbia Commemorative Half Dollar, the palmetto tree dominates the design element. The palmetto tree, South Carolina’s state tree and an important symbol from the Revolutionary War, appears encircled by 13 stars, reinforcing the state’s heritage and identity.
