The obverse design of the 1935 Washington Quarter was crafted by John Flanagan and depicts a left-facing bust of George Washington. Flanagan drew inspiration from a 1786 sculpture by French artist Jean-Antoine Houdon, known for its close likeness to Washington. The portrait presents a composed and formal image, emphasizing Washington’s defining features and sense of authority. The inscription “LIBERTY” is placed above the portrait, while “IN GOD WE TRUST” appears to the left.
