Silver certificates were first issued in the United States in 1878 as large-format notes. These were roughly 30% larger than a modern Federal Reserve Note. The large-format notes continued until 1923. Then in 1928, the Federal Reserve updated the entire paper currency system, which included brand-new, elegant designs and a smaller size. Today, silver certificates are mainly viewed as collectibles considering that the United States is no longer on the silver standard. However, the US government does still recognize them as legal tender.
On the obverse of 1934a Silver Certificate North Africa Notes you will find a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln first appeared on the $5 note in 1914, when they were still produced in the large-size format.
