Paper notes issued in the United States in the early 20th century were various in both types and designs. Starting in 1928, many of these types of notes were modernized to the smaller format most Americans are familiar with today. One type of American currency that modern Americans may not be familiar with is Silver Certificates. Today, 1934a $5 Silver Certificates are available to you online at JM Bullion.
Note Highlights:
United States Silver Certificates were issued by the Treasury with an entirely different backing system than modern forms of currency. First introduced in 1878, Silver Certificates were paper notes issued with varying face values that could be redeemed for US silver dollars when necessary. It was only in the last year of availability, 1964, that the notes could be redeemed for raw silver bullion rather than silver dollars.
All of these 1934a $5 Silver Certificates are available in Choice Uncirculated condition. Notes in this condition have no folds in the note paper, but may come with a small number of flaws. The most noticeable flaws are likely to be the imperfect centering of the designs on one or both sides of the note.
On the obverse of 1934a $5 Silver Certificates is a portrait of President Abraham Lincoln. This portrait of the 16th President of the United States of America debuted on Silver Certificates in 1923 when the series was still available in its larger format. Like all Silver Certificates, these notes are available with blue ink for the serial numbers and Treasury seals.
The reverse side of the 1934a $5 Silver Certificates comes with an image of the Lincoln Memorial. The 1934 Series of Silver Certificates featured five different options, denoted as a, b, c, and d after the initial 1934 release. The varying releases were separated by the combined signatures of the Treasurer of the United States and the Secretary of the Treasury. The 1934a bears the signature combination of Julian and Morgenthau.
